The Omega Speedmaster Professional “Last Man on the Moon” ref. 3574.51.00 commemorates the 35th anniversary of the Apollo XVII mission in 1972, when Eugene Cernan became the last man to walk on the Moon. Released in 2007 in a limited edition of 3,000 pieces, this model preserves the classic Moonwatch design with a 42 mm stainless steel case, black tachymeter bezel, and black tri-compax chronograph dial.
Its standout feature is the commemorative case back, engraved with a medallion dedicated to Apollo XVII and the inscription “E.A. Cernan – Apollo XVII – 7-14 Dec 1972 – Last Man on the Moon,” paying tribute to one of the most historic moments in space exploration. Powered by the hand-wound caliber 1861, a direct descendant of the legendary 861, it offers reliability and approximately 48 hours of power reserve. Offered in excellent condition and complete with its original boxes and papers, this example represents a highly collectible tribute Speedmaster.
Case :the case features a Round shape and is crafted from stainless steel, predominantly satin-finished with polished accents along the lugs. It retains the classic 42 mm Professional Moonwatch proportions, including the asymmetric case profile with integrated crown and pusher guards. The black aluminum tachymeter bezel is an iconic element of the Speedmaster line. The screw-down case back is the defining feature of this limited edition, displaying a central medallion commemorating Apollo XVII and engraved with “E.A. Cernan – Apollo XVII – 7-14 Dec 1972 – Last Man on the Moon,” along with the individual limitation number out of 3,000 pieces.
Dial: the dial is matte Black with the traditional tri-compax layout: small seconds at 9 o’clock, 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, and 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock. Applied indexes and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova for enhanced legibility. The outer minute track is crisp and precise, while the “Speedmaster Professional” inscription preserves the classic Moonwatch aesthetic. The tachymeter scale on the bezel allows average speed calculations over a known distance.
Movement: the Omega caliber 1861 is a hand-wound mechanical movement and a direct evolution of the legendary caliber 861 introduced in 1968. Based on Lemania architecture, it is renowned for its durability, reliability, and serviceability. It beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides approximately 48 hours of power reserve. As the direct descendant of the movement used in NASA-qualified Speedmasters for lunar missions, it maintains a strong and authentic link to space exploration history.
