The LeCoultre Futurematic reference 501 stands as one of the most technically innovative wristwatches produced by the manufacture during the 1950s. Introduced in 1953, the Futurematic line was conceived as a demonstration of LeCoultre’s engineering capabilities, combining advanced mechanical solutions with a modern and distinctive aesthetic.
This example features a 37 mm stainless steel case, a remarkably large and contemporary size for the period. The proportions are elegant and balanced, with tapered lugs that enhance the refined silhouette of the watch. The case appears to be preserved in excellent condition and the serial number on the caseback remains clearly visible.
The glossy black dial is among the most appealing elements of this model. Applied gilt indexes and beautifully preserved gold printing contrast elegantly against the dark background. Two recessed subdials are positioned at 3 and 9 o’clock: one displaying the power reserve and the other the running seconds. The red sector on the power reserve indicator adds a distinctive and dynamic visual detail.
A highly desirable vintage timepiece appreciated by collectors for its iconic design, innovative mechanics and historical importance within LeCoultre production.
Case: the round stainless steel case measures 37 mm, which was considered quite large for the 1950s. The watch features a solid caseback and the distinctive Futurematic system without a traditional crown. Winding occurs exclusively through the automatic mechanism, while time setting is performed via a recessed mechanism on the caseback. The slim, slightly curved lugs contribute to the watch’s elegant and balanced profile.
Dial: the glossy black dial features a symmetrical layout with two recessed subdials. On the left is the power reserve indicator with the characteristic red sector, while on the right is the small running seconds. Applied indexes and gilt printing create a strong visual contrast and reflect the refined aesthetics typical of 1950s watchmaking.
Movement: the LeCoultre caliber 497 is a high-quality automatic movement developed specifically for the Futurematic line. One of its most remarkable features is the absence of a traditional winding crown. The watch relies entirely on its automatic winding system and includes a mechanism that stops the balance wheel when the power reserve is depleted, helping maintain better accuracy once rewound. This innovative approach made the Futurematic one of the most technically advanced wristwatches of its era.
