The Rolex Datejust reference 1603 is one of the most collectible and charismatic vintage Datejust references ever produced. Dating from 1972/1973 and bearing a 3.6 million serial number, this example stands out thanks to its highly sought-after original silver “Wide Boy” Sigma dial.
The “Wide Boy” nickname refers to the unusually broad hands and applied hour markers, a distinctive feature that immediately differentiates it from standard Datejust models of the period. The Sigma symbols flanking the “T Swiss T” signature indicate the use of solid gold hands and indexes, a prestigious detail particularly prized among vintage Rolex collectors.
Its beautifully preserved silver sunburst dial perfectly complements the classic 36 mm Oyster case, while the engine-turned steel bezel characteristic of reference 1603 provides a sporty yet elegant vintage appearance. Further enhancing the desirability of this watch is its exceptionally complete set, including the original Rolex box, outer box, Japanese warranty papers, and period Rolex literature.
Case: the Oyster case features a Round shape and is crafted from stainless steel with a screw-down caseback, ensuring durability and excellent protection for the movement. Reference 1603 is distinguished by its engine-turned steel bezel, a design element no longer produced and highly appreciated among vintage Rolex enthusiasts.
Dial: the dial is Silver Sunburst with a refined radial brushed finish. It features white gold applied baton indexes and the distinctive “Wide Boy” hands. The Sigma markings confirm the use of precious metal components on the dial furniture. Functions include Hours and Date, displayed through the iconic Cyclops magnifier at 3 o’clock. This clean and balanced layout makes it one of the most elegant Datejust configurations ever produced.
Movement: the Rolex Caliber 1570 automatic movement is widely regarded as one of the finest movements ever manufactured by Rolex. Introduced during the 1960s, it became famous for its exceptional reliability, accuracy, and ease of servicing. Certified as a chronometer and equipped with Rolex’s Perpetual self-winding system, the caliber 1570 remains one of the benchmarks of vintage Swiss watchmaking.
